Building classifications

A quick reference for the National Construction Code classes referred to on our forms. Draft — please verify against the current NCC.

Class	Typical use
1a	A single dwelling, house, or townhouse
1b	A boarding house, guest house, or similar (small scale)
2	A building with two or more dwellings (e.g. apartments)
3	Residential accommodation for unrelated occupants (hotels, hostels, etc.)
4	A dwelling within a building of another classification
5	An office building
6	A shop or building used for retail or the sale of services
7a / 7b	A carpark / a building used for storage
8	A laboratory, or building used for handling/processing/production
9a / 9b / 9c	Healthcare / assembly (e.g. schools, theatres) / aged care
10a / 10b / 10c	A non-habitable structure (shed, carport) / structure (fence, pool) / bushfire shelter
